Bananarama

Posted on May 29th, 2009 by Naomi in Uncategorized

Do you know the song “Venus”? I just heard it on the radio recently and it got me wondering about the people that wrote it. I had to look up the lyrics first, because I thought I might have heard it wrong. And then we had some fun looking up Bananarama’s current activities. Turns out they are still recording, and released a new single just a couple months ago. This is a band that is comprised of only women. They seem very nice but I didn’t recognize any of their other songs. I wasn’t able to easily find anymore information about whether they were still touring around or anything, but they seem to be relatively active, so they are performing some concerts here and there and people are really enjoying it!

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton is in London right now, performing a series of concerts at Albert Hall. He was there a few years ago and now he seems much more comfortable than he was back at that time. He’s a great singer and plays his music just a good as before. When you watch him, you’ll notice he’s older, but his music is just as good as it used to be. And people still turn out in droves to hear him sing. It’s a great day for anyone who is a Clapton fan and wants to hear all his best music in person! Are you a fan? Maybe you’ve seen him in person? Leave a reply about what it was like, because I’ve never had the chance to catch him and I want to hear how much fun it is!

Joemus

The Scottish musician Momus has been writing his music for many years. Whenever you think that the music world is getting too monolithic and uninteresting, you should probably check out Momus. His music deals with strange topics, at least compared to the regular fare of pop music. He uses sythesizer-based pop music and scathing lyrics to talk about artistic, social, and a variety of other topics. He never really became widely popular, but his music remains very popular amongst a certain group of people. He also blogs and writes articles, mainly for technical columns. He recently released an album called Joemus, which keeps with his typical style, and is a lot of fun to listen to. If you enjoy music with great lyrics and a certain vaudeville style to it, then you’ll really like Momus.

Tyne Daly

Tyne Daly is performing in NYC at Feinsteins at the Regency. She is still one of the most entertaining singers in the theater world right now. We really can enjoy her show, because she does such a good job making sure that we hear a lot of different kinds of songs during her performance. She won a Tony Award back in the late 80s and her singing has been praised by many. Some of the reviewers tell us that she’s not as good as some other singers, but it’s not all about technical quality. It’s about style and elegance. And Daly has that! She can sing old and new songs with great style and she can be thoroughly entertaining despite the small size of the venue. It makes it a bit more intimate and that’s very nice.

Country in Another Country

When Taylor Swift went to London, she was partly trying to get people to know a little bit more about her and to recognize her face on albums and TV. It was one of the first times that she’s played in a foreign country and the people in attendance really seemed to enjoy the show a lot. When you see Taylor Swift, you often think that she’s such a beautiful singer and her music matches the look. This is essentially what the writer of this review said. He liked some of her music a lot, with a lot of interesting songs. Many of the songs are very teenagery, he says, but he really enjoyed some of the other songs, with some great soaring melodies and beautiful lyrics. Maybe she can make it over there too, where she’s starting to become more well-known everyday!

Staatskapelle

Posted on May 8th, 2009 by Naomi in Uncategorized

The Berliner Staatskapelle  is in New York and they’re offering an interesting set of songs during the next week or so. They will be under the direction of Daniel Barenboim and playing all the symphonies of Gustav Mahler. This will be cool to hear, because usually you don’t hear that much Mahler at once. Some people think that it fosters depression to hear that much, but not if you’re really listening to the music and hearing all the beauty contained in it, despite it’s sometimes mournful or angry facade. This is the kind of concert series that you don’t tend to hear, but apparently, based on the first few performances, they have played them very well with great interpretive skills and everything. Check it our if you want.

Seeger=Nonogenarian

Pete Seeger turned 90 this week. Before this weekend, he was last seen in public during the pre-inauguration festivities for Barack Obama, and he looks relatively young and healthy. This weekend, he, along with Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews and other performers had a celebratory concert for his birthday. This was a night that celebrated Seegers career as well as the hopes and dreams that his music conveyed. He was a major performer for workers rights as well as Civil Rights during the 50s and 60s. He also made the banjo much more popular after the war than it was before. It’s altogether fitting that he should be honored by these performers, who were highly influenced by him over the course of these years.

Spears Speared

The newest tour by Britney Spears, called the Circus Tour, is apparently rather disturbing. Or at least a little unorthodox, according to Variety: “Her Circus tour is so perverse and filled with such troubling, passive-aggressive imagery, you can’t help but walk out wondering if her therapist (or parole officer) has seen this.” This is about right, because she sets it on the theme of “there are two kinds of people”, saying that there are only entertainers and observers. Wow! That’s quite a statement and it’s rather frightening to hear that kind of thing. She’s clearly an entertainer and it makes her seem like she’s kind of full of herself in the end. You’ll just have to read the reviews. Let us know if you’ve checked these concerts out!
